Young Morgenland: Damascus

This evening is particularly important to us, presenting young, up-and-coming talent from Damascus as part of the Young Morgenland series. The Syrian capital’s Higher Institute of Music is the only music academy in the country, and has been a lively place of art and creativity for many years. Since the outbreak of the civil war in 2011, the country has experienced extreme suffering; the students of the institute are very isolated. Without a German embassy or consulate in Syria, visa applications can only be made via the embassy in Beirut with very little hope of success.

Despite these bitter challenges, acclaimed oud virtuoso and Morgenland Festival Osnabrück favourite Mohannad Nasser has put together this young ensemble featuring students from the institute. He writes about the programme, “The ensemble will perform traditional instrumental music written by Syrian composers over the last ten years. This musical heritage has been damaged by the ongoing conflict and has almost been lost. We are happy to share it with you in this concert.”

Taima Nassr – kanun
Osama Abosaada – oud
Mohamad Namik – violoncello
Omran Abou Yahya – percussion

A combined ticket is available for this event.
