Rony Barrak & Elie Khoury
Ever since 2005 Rony Barrak has been regularly mesmerising audiences at the Morgenland Festival Osnabrück with his virtuoso percussion skills – either as a member of the Morgenland All Stars Band or as guest with the NDR Bigband or the Osnabrück Symphony Orchestra. Barrak, who grew up in the Lebanon and studied in London, is at home in all different genres – he has played with musical giants such as Martin Grubinger, Al Di Meola and Sarah Brightman, composes works of his own and teaches at universities in Europe and the USA.
Elie Khoury, who also comes from the Lebanon, was winning prizes as an Oud player when he was only 13 years old and went on to study the instrument at the Conservatory in Beirut. Khoury taught himself how to play the Bouzouki, a long-necked lute, which is similar to the Turkish Saz. Khoury plays both instruments at festivals and concerts all over the world.
This year’s focal point of the festival being the Lebanon, Barrak and Khoury have got together and conceived a very special programme, which promises to give a multi-faceted insight into Lebanese music, and will surely be good for a few surprises.
