The pianist Salman Gambarov is one of the most important members of Baku’s jazz scene. And this scene is astonishingly vivid and innovative. Baku lies at the intersection between Europe and Asia, and it was here that the first conservatory in the Soviet Union was founded. The traditional Mugham is cultivated there, and all these influences flow into Azerbaijani jazz. The trained composer and musicologist, Salman Gambarov, calls the music, which he plays together with various differing ensembles, Bakustic Jazz. In 2009 he was a guest at the Morgenland Festival Osnabrück with his classical jazz trio, and the recording of this acclaimed concert was published on CD. On this Sunday he appears with Vagif Aliyev on percussion and the bass player Emil Gasanov.
